Fragile Joy

We are fragile creatures, and it is from this weakness, not despite it, that we discover the possibility of true joy.

— Desmond Tutu —

We are blessed with an abundance of beautiful hiking trails and nature preserves in Miami County (see Miami County Parks by clicking here).

For years Lori and I have had to hike the trails individually because they are not wheelchair friendly and one of us always needs to stay with Jordan.

Well, all of that changed two nights ago.

For the past few years we’ve been trying to find a wheelchair that could accommodate Jordan’s needs and help us fulfill our dream of exposing his eyes and spirit to the many beautiful images our local trails provide.

We found and ordered what looked like a solution to our problem (Hipppocampe/Vipamat all-terrain wheelchair) and it worked!

We took our first walk as a family last Friday evening at Stillwater Prairie Reserve and joy was exuding from all three of our spirits.

A few things I’ve learned over the past year…

  1. Now is the time to live.
  2. We are fragile creatures living in a fragile world.
  3. Joy can fill us regardless of the circumstance if we so choose.
  4. Great strength is found when we choose to fill our somewhat fragile spirits with joy.

Proverbs 17:22, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
