How many times have we let something get out of perspective? A situation suddenly gets out of control and before we know it we put our foot in our mouths or we act out in such a way that we do things that could destroy our reputation or even our lives? The recent events with the Governor of NY, the mayor of Detroit, Roger Clemens, Heath Ledger, Barry Bonds….and the list goes on and on. We get so consumed with “IT” that eventually “IT” controls us. The recent divorce settlement between Paul McCartney and his ex-wife was somewhat mind boggling to me but nevertheless Sir Paul owed her something but what was reported that she said afterwards indicated she had an “IT” that was totally out of perspective. She said she was coming to the United States in order to do everthing she could in order to tarnish the ex-Beatles name. Why? Because she was upset with her $47.5MM divorce settlement! She thought she deserved more like $475MM.
God did not wire us this way. God wired us with basic principles based on love and truth. We let “it” get out of perspective when we quit having God drive all of our “its” and we allow certain “its” drive us. It happened to me over 20 years ago. Over the past 20 years I have asked God to be in control and about 10 years ago after another tough time in my life became more specific and started turning all of my roles and responsibilities (my “its”) over to God on a daily basis. I let him drive my “its” instead of letting my “its” drive me. It says in Proverbs 16:3 that we are to turn our plans over to God and they will succeed it also tells us in Proverbs 16:1 that our plans come from us but from God comes the answers. Therefore we not only need to turn our plans over to God, we must make and take the time to listen to His instruction.
The key to keeping “IT” in perspective is to make and take the time to give your ”ITS” to God and take the time to listen for his direction. For me this is daily prayer and devotion.
