Last Sunday I participated in an aquabike. As most of you know, I have a love for the sport of triathlon. For those new to my blog, a triathlon involves swimming, biking and running–one after the other–all in the same time period. Personally I believe triathlon is the ultimate test for an athlete.
An aquabike is an event for old people like me who are injured and can’t run. We bike, swim and are the first to graze at the post race meal table while everyone else is still out running.
One of my biggest challenges with triathlon competition is the swim. Unlike the pool I train in, there is no black stripe on the bottom of a lake to tell me if I’m swimming straight or not.
In open water swimming we utilize a technique called sight swimming in order to make sure we are swimming straight. Every eight or ten strokes I lift my head and make sure I’m heading toward the target which is usually a large inflatable buoy. Last weekend’s swim was a bit challenging because the buoys were not easy to see. About 500 meters into the swim I decided to set my sight on some taller trees along the banks of the lake and quit looking for the buoys.
This change in strategy worked great for me.
It amazes me how many people go through life with a sight focused on nothing.
What are your targets?
What are you priorities?
Where is your focus?
Where is your aim?
We only have one shot at living this life on earth, why not set your sight on a target and go after it, one step or stroke at a time?
Hebrews 12:2, “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sate down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
