We live in a very distracted world these days and is why it is so important to have goals that help prevent us from wasting time on things that don’t matter.
Have you ever noticed how energizing it is to have something to look forward to?
Have you ever noticed how draining it is to be focused on people, places, and situations that you have no control over?
Living a life looking forward and not behind or around us is the way to live.
There is a bridge on the bike trail I often ride which includes a floor that was engineered incorrectly. The four inch planks that serve as the base for our wheels to traverse run vertically (with the riders). The boards are uneven and warped and can cause great risk for those of us riding with narrow wheels. They become especially dangerous when they are wet.
A technique I have developed over the years in order to safely cross this bridge is that I focus on the other end of the plank that my front wheel initially makes contact with. It is amazing how this usually keeps me from weaving onto the other other planks and helps me safely cross the bridge. When I am not focused on the other end of the plank and I’m looking at the boards on either side of me, I weave and lose confidence in my ability to stay upright.
How many times do we “weave” and lose confidence in who we are and what we are doing because we lose focus on the end game by getting distracted on what is going on around us or on what is behind us?
Luke 9:62, “Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Isaiah 43:18-19, ““Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
