Reflection
We live in a very distracted world these days, so it is important to have goals that help prevent us from wasting time on things that don’t matter.
Have you ever noticed how energizing it is to have something to look forward to?
Have you ever noticed how draining it is to focus on people, places, and situations over which you have no control?
Living a life looking forward and not behind or around us is the way to live.
I’ve shared the following before, but I ride this bridge often, and these thoughts remain relevant to this day…
There is a bridge on the bike trail I often ride, which includes an engineered-incorrect floor. The four-inch planks that serve as the base for our wheels to traverse run vertically (with the riders). The boards are uneven and warped, which can cause significant risk for those riding on narrow wheels. They become especially dangerous when they are wet.
A technique I have developed over the years to cross this bridge safely is to focus on the other end of the plank that my front wheel initially makes contact with. It is amazing how this usually keeps me from weaving onto the other planks and helps me cross the bridge safely. When I am not focused on the other end of the plank and looking at the boards on either side of me, I weave and lose confidence in my ability to stay upright.
How often do we “weave” and lose confidence in who we are and what we are doing because we lose focus on the end game by getting distracted by what is happening around us?
BTW…I practiced the above philosophy for the last five months as I kept looking forward to getting back to exercising and triathloning the way I like because I could trust my heart again. My ablation procedure was a success yesterday! Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.
Luke 9:62, “Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.â€
Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
Isaiah 43:18-19, ““Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
