Fool on the Hill

Day after day, alone on a hill, the man with a foolish grin is keeping perfectly still, but nobody wants to know him, they can see he’s just a fool, and he never gives an answer, but the fool on the hill sees the sun going down and the eyes in his head see the world spinning ’round…

Most of us remember this song “Fool on the Hill” written by Paul McCartney and recorded by the Beatles for their “Magical Mystery Tour” album.  Some reports say Sir-Paul had a “God experience” and wrote about it in this song.

I love this song as it represents so many different things to me.  I’ve always told my family that this song is about my handicapped son Jordan especially at the end when it says “and he never listens to them, he knows that they’re the fools.”  We’ve spent a lifetime observing rude people looking curiously at Jordan when we are out in public.  I’ve got to believe Jordan knows who the real fools are when they are looking at him so “foolishly.”

I also think this song represents the power in accepting Jesus and receiving the free gift of the Holy Spirit.  We are gifted a peace that transcends all human understanding (Philippians 4:6-7) when we live with Christ.  This peace allows us to see the sun going down and the world spinning ’round.  Walking with Christ also allows us to know our ultimate destiny which is better than anything any genius or fool can come up with here on planet earth.

Our world is full of fools these days and you have to wonder if it is because of a general lack of faith in God and no belief in Jesus and eternal life.  I find it so comforting today to know where I am going when my life on earth ends.
