Glasses Rims and Peace

Reflection

Our gravel drive to our house, which is a quarter-mile long, has been defeated and deformed by the elements spewed forth during this crazy winter we’ve experienced in Ohio.

I get very frustrated and discouraged from the site of our pot-hole-riddled drive.

I have a friend who repairs and gravels the lane every few years, and I spoke with him the other day, asking him to come out and do his thing.

During our conversation, he shared with me that his son’s friend was diagnosed with brain cancer.

My heart sunk. I knew this “kid.” He was a Covington boy in his early thirties.

My distress derived from my gnarley looking lane quickly disappeared while I added another name to my morning prayer list.

Back to the opening quote and a note to self…

There is so much crazy crap going on in the world that I have no good reason to allow myself to slip into a state of “suffering” because my lane looks ugly.

Our peace of mind, or lack thereof, results from our perspective, and our perspective rises from the set of glasses we choose to view the world. A set of glasses with rims made of empathy and understanding or a set of glasses with rims made of selfishness and self-focus.

Colossians 3:2, “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

Prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardship as the pathway to peace.

Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it.

Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His will.

That I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.
