Lent, Peace, and Combating Fear

We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown

— Teal Swan —

Yesterday morning’s sunrise

Yesterday morning I sat and observed a beautiful sunrise from our dining room table.

There was a slight misty-fog at its base and its reflection on our pond showed its power in penetrating through the trees of our woods.

As the COVID-19 pandemic proceeds, I continue to force myself to focus on blessings from God otherwise I would be paralyzed by fear of the unknown.

We know COVID-19 is deadly but something else we need to keep in mind is the destructive nature associated with living in fear.

Fear left unattended can cause a plethora of problems including depression and anxiety but what most people don’t realize is fear can suppress one’s immune system. To be in a constant state of fight or flight, which is caused by fear, is not a good place to be.

The last thing you want during this period in time is a suppressed immune system.

If you find yourself living in a state of fear try boosting your energy and  immune system by:

Having a routine

Avoiding people, places, and things (i.e. 24/7 news) that increase your fears

Eating right, getting adequate sleep and exercising routinely

Calling friends

Helping people

Looking for God’s beauty in simple things like sunrises, sunsets, flowers, birds chirping, and quiet moments

Praying one more time than you worry

Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Last evening’s sunset

Journal your thoughts:

What am I grateful for today?

In what way(s) will I bring light to the world today?

What will I deny myself so I may draw closer to God and gain more peace in my life today?

Prayer:

God, I offer myself to Thee—To build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bondage of self, that I may better do Thy will. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life. May I do Thy will always! Amen.
