Misery is Optional

With life comes challenges, and sometimes challenges can be disruptive. However, no matter how disruptive the challenge, misery is always optional.

Reflection

Many years ago, when I was in early sobriety, I was lamenting my current state of circumstances at an A.A. discussion meeting. I was pretty miserable and was stressing over lots of personal issues, situations, and people.

Then, a friend at that meeting looked me in the eye and said something like this: “You are allowing your serenity to be controlled by other people, places, and things. Until you learn not to allow that to happen, you may never learn how to live sober.”

Boom!

Today, I know it’s my choice whether or not I allow circumstances outside my control to rent space in my brain.

Today, I know my serenity depends on me, not other people, places, and things.

We have a choice whether or not we allow the challenges in our lives to make us miserable.

I always write from experience.

Ecclesiastes 8:6, “For there is a time and a way for everything, although man’s trouble lies heavy on him.”

AFFIRM YOUR P.E.A.C.E.

Plan – A dream remains a dream until you write it down. Putting your dream or goal in writing is the first step in creating a PLAN to achieve it. When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Effort—Turning your dream/goal into reality requires a commitment to consistent and focused effort toward executing your plan. Nothing great in life happens without working hard.

Attitude—If you believe you will achieve your dream, your chances of achieving it increase exponentially. Remember that your attitude determines your altitude in all areas of your life.

Community – Nothing great in life happens by doing it alone. The chances of achieving your dream expand as your COMMUNITY of positive mentors and coaches expand. You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with–and yes, spending time with “people” through books and instructional videos factors into your “average.”

Energy – Chasing and achieving your dream requires optimal mental, physical, and spiritual ENERGY. So put your dream in God’s hands and nurture your mental and physical being.
