“Pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” ~C.S. Lewis
The tragic events that took place this past Monday at the Boston Marathon couldn’t help but make some people question where God was in all of this.
Yesterday I sat down for my devotional time and began reading the 16th Proverb (making a habit of reading one Proverb a day is a great way to discipline yourself to spend time with God). Without coincidence God through Solomon in Proverbs 16:4 says the following, “The Lord works out everything for his own ends–even the wicked for a day of disaster.”
In the margin of my Bible next to this verse I had written “9/11.” I can remember the day after the 9/11 terrorist attack going to this scripture in search of an answer. The Bible I am talking about is a “cheater Bible” and includes explanations of scripture at the bottom of each page.
The explanation of Proverbs 16:4 says; “This verse doesn’t mean that God created some people to be wicked, but rather that God uses even the activities of wicked people to fulfill his good purposes. God is infinite and we are finite. No matter how great our intellects, we will never be able to understand him completely. But we can accept by faith that he is all-powerful, all-loving, and perfectly good. We can believe that he is not the cause of evil (James 1:13-17); and we can trust that there are no loose ends in his system of judgment. Evil is a temporary condition in the universe. One day God will destroy it. In the meantime, he uses even the evil intentions of people for his good purposes (Genesis 50:20).
