Passions & Rewards

Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.

Naming our passions is sometimes a difficult process due to the many things we have to do (our priorities).

I can remember working with a group of young leaders and I asked them to answer three questions about their roles as leaders:

  1. What is required of you?
  2. What do you do that gives you your biggest return on time invested?
  3. What do you do that is most rewarding?

There was a gentleman (Dave) fifteen years my senior who was co-facilitating this group with me and after listening to all the young leaders’ responses I ask Dave if he would mind sharing his thoughts on this exercise with the group.

He obliged and went on to say; “In my days as a leader my number one requirement was to recruit other leaders.  My biggest return came from helping these young leaders turn into better leaders.  My biggest reward came from watching those whom I had invested in, recruit and build more leaders.”

Dave was and still is a passionate leader.

Of all the activities of your day, whether it be professionally or personally, which are the most rewarding?  Which ones give you the biggest return?  What do you do that can be passed on after you are gone?

Somewhere in there lies your passion(s).
