Perseverance and Guiding Principles

It's not hard to make decisions once you know what your values are.

— Roy Disney —

Several years ago I created a set of guiding principles to assist me in my decision-making process.

The set of principles I landed on were conveniently nestled inside the Bible in the eighth verse of the sixth chapter of the book of Micah. In the scripture from Micah, God is telling His people how He’d like for them to live.

Personally, I feel that Micah 6:8 presents a solid framework for living a Godly life, i.e. a life that is pleasing to God.

No, O People, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8, NLT)

My memorable version of Micah 6:8 and subsequently my Guiding Principles are as follows:

Do Right

Give Mercy

Be Humble

Those, along with my Purpose, Vision, and Mission statements, my life imperatives (priorities), and 2020 goals are located on the first page of my journal right across from my daily prayer list.

I review the entire page every morning.

My guiding principles, which are also commonly referred to as core values, serve to keep me aligned with God’s will.

They assist me in making quick and sound decisions that are pleasing to God.

In essence, they serve as my filter during my decision-making process.

Every day I try my best to do right, give mercy, and be humble.

Do they make me perfect?

Not a chance.

I will say they have greatly reduced the number of stupid things I’ve done…ask my wife. 🙂

I honestly do not know what I would have done without my guiding principles during the past six or seven weeks.

They have helped me cope and persevere through all the uncertainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in a healthy manner.

They actually make life simpler for me because when I’m doing right, giving mercy, and being humble…I’m at peace and trusting that He’s got this thing.

What are your guiding principles or core values?

What are some key principles that guide you in your decision-making process?

What do you stand for?

If you are interested in pulling together some guiding principles/core values as well as a purpose, vision, and mission for your life, I will be offering a free personal leadership class (StratField Personal Leadership) online via ZOOM in the next week or two.

StratField Personal Leadership is a process I created years ago for the people I coach.

I’m planning on having the sessions on Thursday evenings and they will run for an hour every week for six weeks. I’m calling the sessions “Thoughtful Thursdays” in hopes of helping people be more thoughtful in the way they live their lives.

BTW…one of my coachees sent me the license plate holder in the picture above. We share the same guiding principles.

1 Timothy 6:6, “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
