I’ve shared this writing a few times in the past, but it never grows old.
Many years ago, we had an infusion therapy company that provided intravenous medications to people in their homes.
One night, I received a call from a hospice nurse who was caring for one of our clients who was receiving I.V. pain medication. She asked if I could come to the client’s house to assist in managing his pain as his pain had suddenly intensified.
When I arrived at the house around 11:00 PM, I was greeted by the patient’s entire family. It was a big family.
It was evident that the man would soon take his last breath on earth, but despite that observation, I was amazed at how much peace I felt in the home.
Fortunately, we were able to get his pain under control, and I decided to hang around just in case there was any more breakthrough pain.
While “hanging around,” I witnessed something I will never forget.
All the family members circled the patriarch of the family’s bed, held hands, and began singing gospel hymns.
I forever have a picture indelibly etched in my mind of them holding hands and singing Amazing Grace.
At that moment, where a spirit of sadness, grief, and loss should have existed, I felt a spirit of courage, peace, and joy, all generated from the certainty of an unending future for a great man who had…fought the good fight, kept the faith and was about to finish his race on earth…(2 Timothy 4:7).
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
As a side note and somewhat of a random thought…
I don’t know about you, but there is something about eternity that gives me additional energy to persevere through all the ups and downs of life. Knowing that when I cross the “finish” line into eternity, I’ve used up every ounce of energy the good Lord gave me for this trial run.
