Post Race Thought – Talk Back

Your biggest competitor is the voice in your head.

— Various —

Over the next several weeks I will be posting random thoughts about lessons learned from my Ironman journey.

No rhyme or reason…just thoughts.

Here is my journal entry two days after my race:

October 1, 2018

What a long, strange, trip it’s been…(Grateful to not be Dead). It’s 6AM on Monday–2 days ago I was about to embark upon a journey into the unknown. My unknown was nothing compared to the many men and women who put their lives on the line everyday so I can enjoy the many fruits of freedom…like swimming, biking and running for 15 hours straight.

The toughest part of this whole process was not knowing. Not knowing whether I could swim in open water and keep a straight line for 2.4 miles. I knew I could bike 112 miles but how would I follow the bike ride with a marathon and not die?

I countered these thoughts, i.e. fears, with the same self-talk I countered them with many times over the past several weeks, “I put in the time, I need to trust the process–Jesus crush these fears. Amen.”

The fear subsided and I experienced a victory like no other.

Do you realize how powerful the voice in your head is?

Can you imagine how much more we all would accomplish or how much peace we would all have if we could learn to talk back and neutralize the negative script that often rolls in our head?

The devil is always trying to control our thoughts because if he can control our thoughts he controls our actions. His goal is to get us to do nothing with our lives.

If the devil can get us to believe we are not worthy, we can’t do something, we aren’t attractive, we aren’t smart, we always screw up etc… Well guess what? We won’t be worthy, we won’t be able to do something, we won’t be attractive and we will be stupid screw-ups.

We reap what we think.

Learn to talk back at your thoughts by asking Jesus to crush your fears. You will begin experiencing victories you once thought were impossible…I write from experience.
