As was yesterday, this writing is from two years ago, and I was compelled to share it again.
BTW…most of my writings are reminders to myself. 🙂
A couple of days ago, I was fighting off pre-race fears.
I didn’t sleep well.
I was rationalizing all the various reasons I shouldn’t race.
- 65-degree lake temperature on a sub-50-degree morning.
- 15-20MPH winds on the bike
- A very hilly run.
- A tight right piriformis muscle.
- A small knot in my left hamstring.
- I’m a senior citizen…at least that’s what my local golf course calls me to save me $5.00. 🙂
Then I said a quick prayer, asking God if I should be a DNS/L (Did Not Start/Loser) for this race.
Then, on my way to check out the race venue, I noticed an older gentleman furiously pedaling his bike into the teeth of a fierce northern wind. He had a bag in each hand. He looked as though he might have been homeless or very near that condition.
A couple of minutes later, the “phone” in my head began ringing, and when I answered, I heard, “You are blessed; your race tomorrow is nothing compared to what that poor man faces every day.”
About an hour later, while driving the bike course, I noticed a roadside memorial. I stopped to pay tribute to “Big Clev.” Behind the cross, it noted that Big Clev had passed about fourteen months earlier.
After reflecting at Big Clev’s memorial, I grabbed hold of the word “Blessed” and held onto it throughout my race the rest of the day.
And, yes, I started and completed 1/2 IM Muncie.
Blessed.
When I feel blessed, the devil can’t land any fear-laced punches on my spirit.
Look for blessings, and you will find them.
Look for bad things, and you will find them.
Seek Him in all things, and He will help you feel blessed…I always write from experience.
Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
