PRAYER and BEATING DEATH

The greatest tragedy in life is the prayer that goes unanswered simply because it goes unasked.

— Mark Batterson —

Jord and Lori are awaiting the kickoff of the Bengals vs. Chiefs game on December 4, 2022.

The most anticipated Monday Night Football game ever occurred last week and involved my mighty Bengals and the powerful and explosive Buffalo Bills.

Those of you who’ve followed my blog for any period know that I am a die-hard Cincinnati Bengals fan…and yes, I’ve “died hard” for many years. 🙂

Our Bengals came out roaring against Buffalo last Monday.

Just past the halfway point of the first quarter of the contest, Damar Hamlin, a defensive back for the Bills, suffered a freak injury and came within seconds of losing his life.

For some reason, I did not attend the game in person but stayed home to watch it with Lori.

We’ve watched hundreds of NFL football games over the years, and there are always injuries, but on this particular occasion, we could tell that something very serious had happened.

Only later we discovered that Damar had gone into cardiac arrest, and CPR administered by medical personnel on the football field had saved his life.

Lori and I sat in silent disbelief as our eyes were glued to the television.

Sports commentators, whose nature allows them to talk through anything, were shocked and left speechless.

Players on the field were kneeling in prayer.

It looked as if none of the fans had left the stadium, and you could see a shocked look on all their faces,

I grabbed Lori’s hand, and we prayed, and we continued to pray in the days following.

I’m guessing our prayers were part of hundreds of millions of prayers being channeled to the Big Guy over the last few days on Damar’s behalf.

Prayer is so powerful.

The world received word from the ICU unit at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center this past Thursday that Damar had regained consciousness. His first question was, “Who won the game?”

Damar had won the game.

He had beaten death thanks to the quick thinking of medical personnel and several million prayers on a night most of us will never forget.

Reminders from this tragic event…

  1. People are inherently good and rely on prayer much more than we all probably think.
  2. There are many more good people in the world than evil.
  3. Prayer is powerful.
  4. Just like Damar beat death with the assistance of expert medical personnel, all of us conquer death with the gift (death and resurrection) from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Can I get an AMEN!?

Mark 11:24, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
