I invest a part of my morning devotion time in reading and reflecting on the writings of Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon was a 19th-century Baptist theologian nicknamed “The Prince of Preachers.”
In yesterday’s reading Spurgeon was focused on courage and what it means to be a courageous Christian. He used scripture from the seventh verse of the first chapter of Joshua–“Only be strong and very courageous.â€
He then explained why it’s important that we, as Christians, must be courageous:
The tender love of God for His servants makes Him concerned for how they feel inside. He wants them to be courageous. Some people think it is okay for a believer to be vexed with doubts and fears, but God does not think so. From this text (Joshua 1:7) it is clear that our Master does not want us entangled with fears. He desires for us to live without fretfulness, doubt, and cowardice. Our Master does not think as lightly of our unbelief as we do. When we are despondent, we are subject to a grievous ailment that is not to be trifled with but instead taken at once to the beloved physician.(1)
Hmmm…He desires for us to live without fretfulness, doubt, and cowardice.
Sorry but not sorry for sounding repetitive in this time of uncertainty. We must avoid going to the places that uncertainty takes us by holding tight to the Great Physician who provides a prescription for all the certainty we need.
The weakest of minds are those which go forward because they are borne along by the throng; the truly strong are accustomed to stand alone and are not cast down if they find themselves in a minority. ~Charles Spurgeon
Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
