reVision and SMARTS

You have to be specific if you want to be terrific.

Fact

2021 is less than two days away.

Question and Answer

What reVisions are you planning on making in your life for 2021?

Do you realize why New Year’s resolutions are almost always doomed for failure?

They are resolutions.

They aren’t goals.

More Facts

A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Thought

I already wrote about dividing your goals into quarterly intervals, along with that thought, I suggest you set three goals per quarter.

I also recommend you make them SMARTS goals.

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time-Bound

Stretch

For example, let’s say you have a desire to enhance your health in 2021. You wouldn’t simply write your goal as–I will improve my health by exercising more in 2021.

The goal should look something like this–Beginning on January 1, I will walk for at least 2.5 hours every week through March 31, 2021. I will do this by walking 30 minutes a day for five days, each week. I will walk during lunch or with my spouse and/or kids after work.

Notice how the goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant (which means it is appropriate and does not interfere with your key personal/professional roles and responsibilities), Time-Bound, and a Stretch (which means it is more than you are currently doing).

It’s imperative for you to write the goal(s) down and place them somewhere for you to review each morning and evening.

Whenever setting goals such as the one above, I suggest having a calendar handy where you can log your efforts and place a big X through the days you accomplished your goal(s).

Last, but certainly not least, place your goals in God’s hands at least once a day and ask Him to give you the courage, energy, and strength to accomplish them.

Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
