Reflection
Most of you know I’ve been battling some challenges with my heart since April. The challenges have led me to be on medication that makes it difficult to exercise with any intensity because I can’t get my heart rate to an aerobic level.
Intense workouts have been my way of calming my mind for years, and they have been essential since I started recovery almost four decades ago.
A few weeks ago, I was on a slow jog on the bike path along the Miami Erie Canal. Minding my own business, I settled in at a pace I felt was pretty good.
Then I heard the pounding of steps coming up from behind me. The owner of those steps was a gentleman about my age, and when he passed me, I couldn’t get over how slow it looked like he was running…and of course, those thoughts led me to question how slow I must look. π
I decided to stretch myself and run with him to my turnaround about a mile and a half ahead.
I kept pace with him and eventually passed him. For the past few weeks, I’ve been running even faster because that incident challenged my self-imposed limits.
Moral of the Story
We will never grow if we remain in our same old comfortable routine.
We must surround ourselves with mentors, books, videos, etc., that stretch us.
Questions?
What self-imposed limits do you need to overcome?
Who and what can help you overcome them?
BTW…I have a heart ablation scheduled for September 19, and I’m looking forward to working out like the old Jay, not old Jay. π
