Coming Through!
Last week, while on my bike, I came across the most dangerous and potentially deadly creature you will find anywhere on a bike trail–a human being walking aimlessly with their nose buried in their phone.
Since I always ride with my head up in anticipation of hazards, I began hollering continuous warning signals from fifty yards out that I was “coming through,” but the “creature” continued to walk a zig-zag line across the path. A line that would have failed a field sobriety test miserably.
Then I finally ground to a halt and passed this obstacle while shaking my head in disbelief.
Why couldn’t you get her attention, Jay?
Well, I’m glad you asked.
As beforementioned, she had her head buried in her phone BUT also had studio-style recording headphones covering her ears.
Flashback
I’ll never forget an exercise my counselor in rehab had me do. The training was to cast a twenty-year vision for my life. The vision exercise was very detailed as it involved looking at where I would be twenty years from now but where my relationship with Lori would be, where my kids would be, where my professional life would be etc.
After completing the task, she asked me about my chances of attaining this vision if I didn’t stay sober.
Wendy, my counselor, was the best at slapping me in the face with reality.
Question
What do you want to do with your life?
Sobering Exercise
Take a sheet of paper and make five columns with the following headings: 2028, 2033, 2038, 2043, PTED (Pass to Eternity Day)
Then create some rows including yourself, your spouse (if you have one), kids, grandkids, other areas of your life. Said differently, the rows are your priority issues. They contain what you care about most.
Then create goals for each of the key priority areas of your life in five-year increments.
At the bottom of the page create space for comments you would like people to make about you during the eulogy portion of your funeral.
Facts
Time never stops. We either make the most of it or it will take the most from us.
We all have a PTED.
Not much good occurs when our heads are down with our eyes focused on our phones and our ears, willingly, deafened to the world around us…kind of like living as an addict only able to see as far as our next fix and drowning out the pleas from loved ones begging us to get our lives back together.
Successfully achieving our vision in life is all about keeping the main thing(s) the main thing(s).
Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
