Did you fill out the BE-DO-HAVE document? BE-DO-HAVE EXERCISE
The reason I like this exercise is because it forces you to take a serious look at two areas of dream chasing that a lot of people don’t look at.
For most people a dream or vision is more about having something than it is about being something.
I fell into that trap early in my adulthood when I was chasing money and things. Money and things should never be the focal point of our dreams.
Our dreams should stretch us to become better. Our dreams should stretch those we touch to become better. If we happen to make some money, or buy a better car or house while doing it; so be it. But those are simply by-products of chasing our real dream.
No where in the Bible does God encourage us to build bigger houses or collect and keep money and things. He does talk a lot about growing and expanding as human beings so we can be an asset to others.
So how does the BE-DO-HAVE exercise work? I’m glad you asked.
- Let’s say your dream is to become the best dad you can possibly be for your kids…I’m thinking that was probably my dad’s dream.
- In order to be the best dad possible you commit to doing the following: A. Play an active part in their spiritual growth. B. Support them in their school endeavors. C. Be present in their life. E. Save money for their college education. (We will be talking about our mission statement next week, but these four “do’s” are key ingredients in this person’s mission statement.)
- What you will have as a result of striving to be and committing to doing the above, is most likely a child grounded in his or her faith with a very strong value around education. I’m guessing you will also have a child who will make the world a better place to live.
More on vision (dream with a plan) tomorrow.
